Nitish Kumar files his nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha on March 5

Less than four months after being sworn in for a record 10th term, Nitish Kumar is preparing to move to the Rajya Sabha — a shift that would clear the way for a BJP chief minister in Bihar. The speed of the transition has raised a sharper question: was this outcome pre-scripted?

On November 20, 2025, Nitish Kumar was sworn in as Bihar chief minister for a record 10th time after he and Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to a sweeping victory in the Assembly elections.

Less than four months later, Nitish — who recently turned 75 — is set to move to the Rajya Sabha, clearing the way for the BJP to install its own chief minister in Bihar for the first time and deepen its footprint across much of north and central India.
