Historian Sam Dalrymple’s Shattered Lands examines the five Partitions of the British Indian empire, which once spanned from Aden in the west to Burma (now Myanmar) in the east.

In a conversation with TOI+, Sam identifies Burma’s separation from India in the 1930s as the first true Partition — an event far more consequential than a simple administrative boundary change.
