While legal experts say the proposed amendments could be struck down, there’s been a demand for such norms in some parts of the state for a while

The BJP government in Gujarat has proposed what it says are ‘anti-love jihad’ amendments to existing marriage registration rules. However, the amendments would require all couples - whether inter-religious or of the same religion - to inform their parents before registering their marriage and submit an undertaking to that effect. The parents are also required also be informed of the marriage registration.

The proposed norms have been welcomed by AAP, met with silence by Congress and flagged by legal experts as a potential constitutional violation.
