Munir is using Pakistan's crypto deal with Trump's family as leverage to promote his fundamentalist Islamist ideology even as he regards India as an existential enemy

Pakistan has been the West’s handmaiden since its formation in 1947. Every Pakistani military dictator, from Ayub Khan and Zia-ul-Haq to Pervez Musharraf and Asim Munir, has done America’s bidding. Since the Pakistani army controls an estimated one-third of the country’s economy, Western politicians find it easy to do business with it.

At the MaxCity Litfest in Mumbai last month, during my conversation on stage with former ambassador to Pakistan TCA Raghavan, I pointed out how politicians from the United States cut deals with Pakistani generals within hours. For example, US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and real estate billionaire Steve Witcoff played a key role in sealing a crypto deal with Pakistan days before the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, 2025.
