Amid speculation that the plane that went down in Kazakhstan on December 25 might have been hit by Russian air defence systems, Russian President Vladimir Putin has apologised to his Azerbaijani counterpart for what he called a “tragic incident”.

Azerbaijan Airlines earlier blamed the crash on unspecified “physical and technical interference” and announced the suspension of flights to several Russian airports.
