With the March 4 action in the Indian Ocean, the US Navy effectively reintroduced classic submarine-versus-surface-ship warfare — an aspect of naval combat that had remained largely dormant since World War II

On August 14, 1945 — just days before the end of World War II — the submarine USS Torsk sank the Japanese coastal defence frigate CD-47 in the Sea of Japan using Mark 27 ‘Cutie’ and Mark 28 torpedoes.

For the next eight decades, US submarines continued to carry torpedoes but did not deploy them against enemy ships in combat.
