Constant alerts, multiple metrics & goals make digital health tracking stressful. Look out for these warning signs

For six months, Neha (name changed) was juggling mood trackers, journalling platforms and meditation apps to manage stress. But what began as a support system for the 35-year-old software professional from Delhi soon turned into a burden. Repeated reminders to log emotions and track progress started to feel like a second job. She felt more anxious and “pressured” by every notification sent to optimise her mental health.

“She was trapped in a loop of constant self-analysis,” says Gunjan Arya, the Delhi-based counselling psychologist who treated her. “The sheer volume of digital exercises triggered performance anxiety rather than giving her clarity. The very tools designed to help her were fuelling her burnout.” Replacing app-based monitoring with simpler, offline habits such as physical activity and direct emotional expression eased Neha’s mental fatigue within weeks. But Arya says cases of ‘health app burnout’ are getting more common by the day, even for those tracking physical health metrics. “When well-being becomes just another checklist, it ceases to be a tool for healing.”
