Doctors are reporting a sharp rise in Guillain-Barré Syndrome cases, with Pune witnessing 101 cases of which 16 people are on ventilators. Linked to infections like Campylobacter jejuni, this rare neurological disorder can cause paralysis but is treatable

The Maharashtra health department reported on January 26 what is suspected to be the first death linked to the Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) outbreak presently concentrated in Pune. With the caseload surging to 101, including 28 new confirmed infections, public health experts are sounding the alarm over the potential magnitude of this rare but treatable neurological disorder.

The suspected GBS death occurred in Solapur city, according to the health department’s daily bulletin, though further details have not been disclosed. The situation is particularly concerning given the steep rise in cases, with 16 patients currently requiring ventilator support.
