The controversial theft of gold from Kerala’s Sabarimala temple has shocked the state and raised questions about how the heist was carried out despite safeguards meant to prevent such a theft.
After it read a report by the Special Investigation team, the Kerala High Court described the alleged theft of gold from the Sabarimala temple as an “extraordinary case involving the pilferage of Lord Ayyappa’s sacred valuables.”
The state-appointed Special Investigation Team’s (SIT) report said gold embedded in the holiest structures of one of India’s richest and well known temples was allegedly diverted through a coordinated operation involving temple authorities, intermediaries and private jewellers.
