NSUI member Irfan Khan posted an heart-wrenching video, in which a poor rickshaw-puller can be seen crying as his rickshaw gets towed away by municipality workers.

The poor man can be seen crying in front of a news reporter as others around him take a video of the entire incident.

Khan tweeted the video with a text that reads, “The Law of this country is only for poor peoples (sic)”, thereby implying that the video was from India.


Same video was shared on Facebook with similar claims.

South City Corporation (DSCC) seized the rickshaw of a man named Fazlur, who broke into tears.

VERIFICATION AND METHODOLOGYUsing InVID google chrome extension, we broke the video into keyframes and ran reverse-image search on them. In results, we found the same video uploaded to a Bangladeshi Facebook page on October 8, 2020. The caption accompanying the video explained the ordeal of the poor rickshaw-puller.

The video carried the logo of 'Jamuna Tv', which is a channel operating in Bangladesh.

Using relevant keywords, we found a news report published on Dhaka Tribune dated October 8, 2020. Titled 'Rickshaw puller turns entrepreneur with help from Shwapno', the report was about the same rickshaw-puller. He was identified as Fazlur Rahman.

He had bought the rickshaw with a Tk80,000 loan, having lost his previous job amid the coronavirus

pandemic

. When DSCC launched an operation to evict battery-powered rickshaws in the Jigatala area of Bangladesh, Rahman’s rickshaw got impounded.

However, his fortunes took a miraculous turn, thanks to assistance from leading retail chain Shwapno, which offered to put him back on his feet by purchasing two rickshaws for him.
