Test Article | Lakers lose opener despite Doncic's brilliance: Doncic shines with 43 points in Lakers' 119-109 loss; Team struggles without LeBron's leadership
Luka Doncic scored 43 points with 12 rebounds and nine assists for the Los Angeles Lakers in their season-opening 119-109 loss to the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday night, stepping up in the absence of LeBron James who is sidelined with sciatica for the next few weeks.
Doncic required extensive postgame treatment, delaying his media appearance by over an hour after the game. The Lakers did not specify if the delay was due to soreness from his performance.
The game highlighted both challenges and opportunities for the Lakers without James, the NBA's all-time leading scorer. The team now needs to find ways to win without solely depending on Doncic.
"I think there was a lot of positive things tonight, and obviously a lot of things we've got to work on. But my confidence is fine," Doncic said.
Coach JJ Redick addressed the difficulty of balancing the team's current situation with future prospects when James returns.
"It's hard to forget about LeBron. The reality is that when you're focused on the group that you have, you've got to make that group work. Sometimes you can just be like, 'Oh my God, we're going to get LeBron back at some point!' To be honest with you, I did have one moment in that first half when we had a few possessions where we couldn't score against the zone, I thought it would be great to have LeBron just to throw it to at the high post," Redick said.
Doncic showcased his scoring abilities, particularly in the paint against the smaller Warriors lineup. He shot 15 of 17 inside the three-point line and 13 of 14 in the paint, though only making 2 of 10 three-point attempts.
"When I attack the paint, there are (good) things. I've just got to more attack the paint, and then go from there," Doncic said.
While Doncic's improved conditioning helped his performance, he experienced minor hip pain during the game. His teammates struggled to capitalize when he passed the ball, with starters Rui Hachimura and Gabe Vincent combining for just 4 of 10 shots.
"He was being very aggressive today. He gets a lot of attention, so we'll get a lot of wide-open 3s from him. That's going to be the season. They're going to do whatever it takes to guard, so we have to be ready to shoot, to make a decision," Hachimura said.
Austin Reaves, facing early foul trouble, scored 26 points with 13 coming in the fourth quarter. The Lakers committed 20 turnovers, which players attributed to adjusting to new teammates, particularly center Deandre Ayton.
"I think I have to do a better job talking to Ayton, communicating what I want, what he wants. I don't think he got enough touches, so that was on me today," Doncic said.
The Lakers struggled in the third quarter, continuing a pattern from previous seasons. They fell behind by 17 points during a 16-4 Warriors run and couldn't close the gap to less than six points.
"The trend I see is that we continue to be a terrible third-quarter team. That was last year. That was the preseason. Got to rethink some things, and it's a two-way thing with the guys: What do they need at halftime to make sure they're ready to play? They're not ready to play at the start of the third quarter," Redick said.
