Scheduled for announcement on January 6, the forthcoming HDMI 2.2 specification will introduce higher bandwidth, expanded resolutions, and faster refresh rates, potentially revolutionizing audio-visual technology. While specific technical details remain scarce, the new standard is expected to build upon HDMI 2.1b's existing capabilities, which currently support up to 10K resolution and 120Hz refresh rates.

Notably, the new standard will require a specialized cable, suggesting potential hardware upgrades for consumers eager to leverage the latest technology. However, the HDMI Forum assures backwards compatibility, meaning existing devices will not become immediately obsolete.

The announcement follows seven years since HDMI 2.1's original introduction, with the technology gradually filtering from high-end to more affordable consumer electronics.

While technical specifics are still under wraps, industry insiders speculate the new specification might enable higher resolutions and refresh rates without requiring Display Stream Compression, potentially offering smoother, more detailed visual experiences. The initial implementation is likely to begin with premium graphics cards and televisions before broader market penetration.
