Google has deployed a fix for second-generation Chromecast and Chromecast Audio devices that stopped working last week, according to an email sent to affected users on Tuesday. Many devices should already be functioning again without user intervention.

Users whose devices remain inoperable are advised to reboot their Chromecasts and try casting again. Those who performed factory resets during the outage will need to reconnect their devices using the latest Google Home app (version 3.30.106 on iOS or 3.30.1.6 on Android).

The company noted that the app update is being rolled out gradually, as it “may take a few days to roll out to everyone,” so users who don't see it immediately should expect it within the next few days.

What was the reason behind Chromecast outage

The outage, which began early last week, prevented users from casting content to their devices, displaying "Untrusted device" errors. Google acknowledged the issue within days and promised a solution.

While Google hasn't officially confirmed the cause, many believe an expired certificate was responsible. According to one Reddit user, the certificate embedded in the Chromecast devices expired on March 9, 2025, precisely when the failures began to occur.
