'I was given the freedom to build my career'
By Geetanjli Dhanjal
Strong family support is one of my greatest privileges. It’s easy to overlook how essential such encouragement is until you see others navigating their careers without similar support. I recall moments early in my career, overwhelmed and in doubt, when encouraging conversations with family reinforced my self-worth and re-energised my perspective. I’ve flourished because my immediate family, spouse and children believed in me, my financial independence and my hard work, and provided an emotional foundation for growth. Their acceptance of long working hours, travel, and occasional absences – such support helped me to keep going at a time when I saw other relatives not ‘allowed’ the choice to pursue a professional path. I was given the freedom to build mine.
I recognise my experiences aren’t universal. Many talented women entering technology-related fields lack familial support and often lack a support network while facing significant emotional and cultural barriers to success. When I talk to female colleagues, their strength and resilience inspires me. I have seen many of my colleagues often taking time off to attend to family responsibilities as they have no one to share their load at home. They attend to matters related to the family’s health and wellness, and it is assumed to be their responsibility only. I deeply empathise with them when I see such disparities in responsibilities.
Take time to talk to colleagues
I’ve learned true support is not limited to providing tangible resources – it could be something as small as taking time to talk to colleagues about their problems and struggles. By actively mentoring colleagues, listening openly without judgment, and advocating for fair treatment, I can lead by example, inspiring others to do the same.
I recall a conversation with a team member who was hesitant about accepting an overseas assignment, unsure if her partner would support the trip. By discussing the logistics and offering reassurance, I was able to give her the moral support she needed to bring up the opportunity with her partner – something she later realised had been more of a personal mental block than an actual barrier.
Encouraging men to become active partners in building a supportive and inclusive environment for women helps foster empathy, understanding, and mutual respect.
Intentionally lift others as you rise
To young women climbing their career ladders, my advice is to remember your passion and remain connected to your purpose but also be aware of the pillars to success available to you. There will inevitably be moments of self-doubt – I’ve experienced many of those moments. During those times, acknowledge your worth and celebrate your achievements consistently, no matter how small a success may seem. Lastly, advocate passionately not only for yourself but for those around you, intentionally lifting others as you rise. As my family’s support helped, so does your voice on behalf of others – never hesitate to share your support and amplify the voices of your colleagues.
