Read Microsoft exec’s 'bitter-sweet' note on LinkedIn: In May, I celebrated 25 years at Microsoft, today, however…
Microsoft began its largest layoff in over two years last week, cutting approximately 9,000 employees across multiple divisions including Xbox, with one veteran manager's emotional LinkedIn post capturing the human cost of corporate restructuring. Chris Bynum, a Customer Success Account Management Manager who celebrated his 25th work anniversary just two months ago, became the face of the mass termination when his candid social media message went viral.
"In May, I celebrated a significant milestone at Microsoft – 25 years of dedicated service. Today, however, marks a bittersweet moment as I share that I have been laid off," Bynum wrote in his LinkedIn post on .
The layoffs significantly impacted Microsoft's Xbox video game business and other divisions, with the company prioritizing operational efficiency through management layer reductions. Gaming CEO Phil Spencer confirmed in an internal memo that the restructuring aims to position the division for "strategic growth areas" while ending work in certain business segments.
Bynum revealed the widespread impact, stating: "This unexpected turn has also affected many colleagues in my organization, including my entire team. To all those I've had the privilege to work alongside, I am grateful for the cherished memories we've created and I extend my best wishes for the paths you will tread in the future."
This marks Microsoft's second major wave of layoffs this year as it seeks to control costs while ramping up artificial intelligence spending. The company previously eliminated approximately 6,000 positions in May, making this the third round of cuts in recent months.
"As I navigate this new chapter, I remain open to exploring fresh opportunities," Bynum concluded, demonstrating resilience despite the unexpected career transition that has sparked industry discussions about corporate loyalty and veteran employee treatment during tech sector consolidation.
