OpenAI’s Google Search rival, ChatGPT Search, now available for everyone

OpenAI has removed the login requirement for ChatGPT's search feature, enabling anyone and everyone to use the AI-powered search engine without creating an account. The move positions ChatGPT as a direct competitor to traditional search engines like Google and Microsoft Bing.

Users can now access ChatGPT search directly through chatgpt.com, where the AI assistant provides web-sourced answers with cited references. The feature uses a fine-tuned version of GPT-4o and leverages partnerships with third-party search providers, including Microsoft Bing, to deliver results.

This marks the final stage in ChatGPT search's broader rollout, which began with its launch to paid subscribers in October 2024, followed by expansion to free account holders in December.

This development could impact Google's search market dominance. Experts predict ChatGPT could capture up to 1% of the search market share with this increased accessibility.

OpenAI's search implementation differs from traditional engines by providing AI-generated summaries of search results while maintaining transparency through source citations.
