OpenAI posts $4.3 billion in first-half revenue amid AI boom
ChatGPT creator OpenAI has reportedly recorded a jump of 16% in revenue in the first half of 2025. According to a report by The Information, OpenAI’s revenue reached about $4.3 billion. As per the report, the growth in the revenue of OpenAI can be attributed to the increasing demand for generative AI tools across industries. OpneAI’s flagship products including ChatGPT Enterprise and its API services have also been instrumental in this growth.
The report further reveals that despite 16% jump in the revenue, OpenAI is still burning large amount of cash in its operations. According to the report by The Information, the company has burned around $2.5 billion in cash in the first half. The cash burn was majorly associated with AI development and running the company’s flagship ChatGPT software.
The report further mentioned that OpenAI spent around $$6.7 billion on research and development. It also appears that the ChatGPT creator will meet its annual revenue target of $13 billion.
Microsoft, which has invested billions into OpenAI and integrated its models into products like Copilot for Microsoft 365, remains a key partner in scaling the company’s technology and distribution.
While OpenAI is privately held and does not disclose official earnings, The Information’s report suggests the company is on track for another record year. In 2024, OpenAI was estimated to have generated more than $9 billion in annualised revenue, driven by subscriptions and enterprise contracts.
