OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says he no longer writes letters to his one-year-old son because of Elon Musk’s …
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has revealed that he stopped writing personal letters to his young son after realizing they could become part of legal proceedings linked to Elon Musk’s lawsuit against the AI company. In an interview with Forbes recently, Altman, who became a parent in February 2025, said the growing legal scrutiny around OpenAI forced him to rethink how much of his private life he puts on record. The issue has gained attention as OpenAI prepares for a potential IPO and continues to fight a high-profile lawsuit filed by Elon Musk, a co-founder who later left the company.
During the interview, Altman said he initially wrote letters to his son to document major moments in his life and work. These letters included reflections on challenges at OpenAI and decisions he was dealing with as CEO.
However, he stopped after Pages from OpenAI president Greg Brockman’s personal diary were made public during court filings connected to Elon Musk’s lawsuit against OpenAI.
Elon Musk has sued ChatGPT-maker OpenAI, accusing the company of abandoning its original mission and prioritising profit over safety. The lawsuit has triggered document requests and disclosures as part of the legal process.
The lawsuit is officially headed to trial this spring. Last month, federal Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers set jury selection for April 27, with proceedings starting the following day. The trial is said to last up to four weeks, through May 22, as per the court filings.
Sam Altman said becoming a parent has changed his priorities. A year after becoming a parent, he says the experience is “significantly underhyped.”
“It has been my favorite thing ever in life by far,” Sam Altman told Forbes. “And I don’t think I have anything deep or non-cliché to say about it, other than I thought it was going to be great, and it’s much better than I thought it was going to be.”
But it has also come with new challenges. “I end up living in a weirdly isolated world,” Altman said stating he gets stopped and pitched startup ideas when he’s at the park with his son.
“I fight that every inch … I think the more you let the world build a bubble around you, the more insane you go.”
