Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang's push for ‘sovereign AI’ is now resonating with European leaders as they are also pushing for the development of their own artificial intelligence infrastructure. CEO Jensen Huang, who has championed the concept since 2023, recently toured London, Paris, and Berlin, unveiling a series of partnerships and investments aimed at empowering Europe’s digital autonomy. This new shift highlights the growing European ambition to reduce the dependence on US tech giants. Along with this, EU also wants to foster homegrown AI capabilities.
What is Jensen Huang's idea of Sovereign AI
For those unaware, as part of Sovereign AI each nation has to develop and control its own AI systems reflecting their culture, language and values. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang stressed of the fact that AI is an important infrastructure just like electricity or internet and that Europe must act swiftly to avoid falling behind.
The European Union itself has recognized this imperative. In February, the European Commission announced plans to establish four "AI gigafactories" across the continent, with an estimated investment of $20 billion, specifically aimed at reducing dependence on U.S. firms. An EU official reportedly confirmed that Huang had assured the Commission of Nvidia's commitment to allocating some chip production to Europe for these factories.
