Google has started to roll out a new feature in Search that will allow users to customise their news experience, giving them more control over the sources they see in the Top Stories section. The new tool, called Preferred Sources, is rolling out to users in the US and India, and will be available to all users in the coming days.
Google explains that the feature lets users select their favourite news outlets, from major publications to local blogs, to see their articles more prominently displayed.
“When you select your preferred sources, you’ll start to see more of their articles prominently displayed within Top Stories, when those sources have published fresh and relevant content for your search,” the company announced.
How Google’s Preferred Sources feature works: A step-by-step guide
To get started, users can:
- Search for a topic that is currently in the news.
- Click the icon to the right of the Top Stories section.
- Select their preferred sources from a list.
- Refresh their search results to see the changes.
Once selected, content from these sources will appear more frequently in Top Stories or in a new, dedicated “From your sources” section. The company noted that users will still see content from other sites, and they can manage their selections at any time.
According to Google, an early testing with its Labs users showed strong interest in the feature, with over half of users choosing four or more sources. The company says that publishers can also encourage their followers to select their websites as a preferred source using tools provided by Google.
This move gives users more power to tailor their search results, potentially helping them stay better informed on topics from outlets they trust and follow.
