Google has announced Wear OS 7, the latest version of its smartwatch operating system. The new version of the OS brings hosts of features which are designed to make wearables more useful, efficient, and personalised. The update also brings features like Live Updates, dynamic widgets, enhanced media controls, and improved battery life, while also laying the groundwork for deeper AI integration through Gemini Intelligence. “We recognize that watches are essential, all-day companions to your users. That’s why we're continuing to invest in power optimizations so your users can do more with their favorite apps. For watches upgrading from Wear OS 6 to Wear OS 7, average users can expect up to 10% improvement in battery life. As part of a broader rollout to the Android ecosystem, select watches arriving later this year will come with Gemini Intelligence, providing proactive and personalized help to our users so they can focus on what matters,” said Google.
Wear OS 7 features
Live updates for real-time information
One of the headline features is Live Updates, which replaces the older Ongoing Activities API. This allows apps to deliver real-time information directly on the watch face — whether it’s tracking a food delivery, monitoring a workout, or following a live score. The goal is to make smartwatches more proactive and glanceable, reducing the need to constantly check phones.
Dynamic widgets for personalization
Google is introducing Wear Widgets, built on Jetpack Glance and RemoteCompose. These widgets come in 2x1 and 2x2 layouts, mirroring Android’s mobile widget design for consistency. Users can pin widgets for quick access to apps like weather, calendar, or fitness, making the watch face more customizable and functional.
Smarter media controls
With media enhancements, Wear OS 7 gives users more control over audio playback. A new Remote Output Switcher lets users seamlessly change where audio plays — from earbuds to speakers — directly from the wrist. Additionally, per-app auto-launch settings ensure that media controls appear only when relevant, streamlining the experience.
Workout tracker for fitness enthusiasts
Fitness tracking gets a boost with the new Workout Tracker. This standardized system supports heart rate monitoring, workout progress, and integrated media control. Google has partnered with ASICS Runkeeper to debut the feature later this year, promising a more unified fitness experience across apps.
Developer tools and watch face upgrades
For developers, Compose for Wear OS 1.6 introduces improved navigation, list handling, and ambient mode support. Meanwhile, Watch Face Format 5 adds advanced customization options like auto-sizing, blend modes, and hierarchical settings, giving designers more creative freedom.
Gemini intelligence integration
Select upcoming devices will feature Gemini Intelligence, Google’s AI assistant. This allows users to issue natural voice commands such as “Start tracking my run” or “Play my workout playlist,” with apps like Samsung Health responding instantly. Developers can also leverage AppFunctions to integrate their apps with Gemini for task automation.
