Google offers voluntary exit packages to UK-based staff, says it will continue to hire for..
Google has begun offering voluntary buyout packages, or exit packages, to employees in its UK offices, saying that it is extending a restructuring program previously rolled out across several US divisions earlier this year. The latest move is seen as the newest effort by the company to optimise operations and refocus on artificial intelligence (AI). It remains unclear exactly to which staff in the UK the offers were extended to. Google employs more than 7,000 people in the UK.
According to Business Insider, the voluntary exit package was confirmed by a Google spokesperson. The report says that an email detailing the voluntary exit package were sent to UK staff this week
“Earlier this year, some of our US teams introduced a voluntary exit programme with severance for US-based Googlers, and we are now also offering the programme in the UK to support our important work ahead,” the spokesperson stated.
“We are committed to investment in the UK and continue to hire for critical roles and important projects aligned with our company priorities to ensure we can deliver on the opportunity that AI offers the UK economy,” the spokesperson said.
The voluntary exits in the UK mirror similar efforts in the US, where teams across Android and Core engineering were offered buyouts. These programs have often been characterised as a way for Google to ensure its workforce is aligned and excited about the company’s decisive shift toward AI.
Google now joins other industry giants like Amazon, Meta and Microsoft, which have recently reduced headcounts through layoffs or voluntary exit programs to become more efficient and flatten management structures.

Commitment to UK investment and more hirings
Despite offering the packages, which provide severance based on an employee’s tenure, Google insisted it remains committed to its presence in the UK.“We are committed to investment in the UK and continue to hire for critical roles and important projects aligned with our company priorities to ensure we can deliver on the opportunity that AI offers the UK economy,” the spokesperson said.

YouTube also offered voluntary exit package in October
According to the report, this trend is also visible at Google subsidiary YouTube, where CEO Neal Mohan offered a voluntary exit package in October, noting that while it was an “incredibly exciting time at YouTube,” some employees might be ready for a “new challenge” amid the AI reorganisation.Top Comment
