Facebook parent company Meta announces more layoffs at San Francisco office; company says: As we said last month, we are moving some of our investment from Metaverse to …
Facebook parent Meta has announced that it will cut 102 more jobs at its San Francisco Peninsula offices. The latest round of layoffs comes as the company shifts investment from its metaverse division to wearable technology. The company filed these job cuts with California's Employment Development Department, which will affect Meta's corporate locations on the San Francisco Peninsula in Silicon Valley, including facilities in San Mateo County and the company's Menlo Park headquarters.
In an email (seen by the Silicon Valley Business Journal), a Meta spokesperson said, “We said last month that we were shifting some of our investment from metaverse toward wearables. This is part of that effort, and we plan to reinvest the savings to support the growth of wearables this year.”
The announcement follows Meta's earlier decision to scale back its Reality Labs division by 10%. That team handles augmented reality products and services, including the metaverse. In recent months, Meta also cut 318 jobs at its Menlo Park division.
Last month, the company’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, said that Meta's teams are becoming leaner and more productive as the company invests $115 billion or more in AI tooling to increase output. He also said that AI has enabled a single employee to do the work of an entire team.
Despite significant workforce reductions, Meta increased its headcount by 6% last year, reaching over 78,000 employees by the end of December 2025, according to its fourth-quarter earnings report.
According to executive recruitment firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, nearly 55,000 layoff notices were credited to AI. Last year, San Francisco-based Salesforce warned of potential layoffs affecting 4,000 employees as it develops AI agents to handle customer support tasks.
AI-related workforce reductions have continued into 2026, with several major tech companies also citing AI as a factor in reducing headcount.
In recent weeks, Pinterest cut more than 100 jobs in the Bay Area, pointing to a shift toward ‘AI-proficient talent.’ Google and Amazon have also announced layoffs.
Google recently eliminated 77 positions in Sunnyvale, while Amazon reduced 666 jobs in Silicon Valley as part of an AI-focused restructuring.
