Dolby Laboratories has announced Dolby Vision 2, the next-generation picture quality technology –powered by AI. According to the company, this new version is designed to unlock the full potential of modern televisions and provide content creators with more creative control. According to Dolby, Dolby Vision 2 is powered by a new, more powerful image engine that works in tandem with Dolby's extensive content ecosystem. It also introduces Content Intelligence, a new set of tools that it claims intelligently optimise a TV's picture based on what is being watched and the viewing environment, leveraging AI capabilities to fine-tune the presentation.

Key features of Dolby Vision 2 Content Intelligence:

  • Precision Black: Designed to make dark images crystal clear without compromising the artist's original intent.
  • Light Sense: Fine-tunes picture quality through advanced ambient light detection.
  • Sports and Gaming Optimisation: Provides enhancements like white point adjustments and motion control specifically for live sports and gaming content.
Beyond HDR, Dolby Vision 2 also introduces Authentic Motion, a tool that is aimed to provide creative-driven motion control to ensure scenes feel more cinematic by reducing unwanted judder.

Dolby Vision 2 will be available in two tiers:

  • Dolby Vision 2 Max: Designed for the highest-performing TVs, with premium features to utilize the full capabilities of these displays.
  • Dolby Vision 2: Delivers dramatically improved picture quality to mainstream TVs, powered by the new Dolby Image Engine and Content Intelligence.
The announcement was accompanied by two key industry partners: TV manufacturer Hisense and French media company CANAL+. Hisense is the first TV brand to announce that it will bring Dolby Vision 2 to its lineup, beginning with its RGB-MiniLED TVs. CANAL+ has also committed to supporting the new technology, leveraging it to enhance its content lineup, from movies and TV shows to live sports.
