‘Chinese delay’ make Apple and Foxconn seek government help

Apple and Foxconn have urgently appealed to the Indian government for assistance as specialized manufacturing equipment faces significant delays at Chinese ports, threatening to impact India's ambitious electronics manufacturing expansion plans.

According to MoneyControl, while current production remains stable, industry sources warn that prolonged holdups could derail Apple's manufacturing growth strategy in India. The delays, which have persisted for several months, particularly affect machinery crucial for annual iPhone model trial runs.

The equipment holdup appears to be part of China's broader strategic response, potentially retaliating against India's restrictions on Chinese official visas and its stance on Chinese investments, sources familiar with the matter revealed. Both companies have raised their concerns with officials at India's IT Ministry.

The situation poses a larger problem to the country's developing electronics manufacturing sector, which has been actively working to strengthen its component manufacturing capabilities. If China escalates these delays, it could create significant obstacles for the entire Indian handset and electronics industry.
