Now, a new warning has surfaced online in which an Irish man shares his plight of trusting ChatGPT for medical advice. As reported by the Mirror, an Irish man named Warren Tierney and a father of two turned to ChatGPT for medical advice instead of consulting a doctor has been diagnosed with a chronic illness.

A 37-year old man asked ChatGPT about a persistent sore throat. Replying to the query, the chatbot suggested it was likely nothing series and offered general reassurance. Trusting ChatGPT, the man deployed seeking professional medical help.

After months of persisting issue, he reached out for medical help. A medical examination revealed a serious chronic condition that required immediate treatment—one that could have been managed earlier had he consulted a healthcare provider. “I think it ended up really being a real problem, because ChatGPT probably delayed me getting serious attention,” Tierney told reporters. “It sounded great and had all these great ideas. But ultimately I take full ownership of what has happened”.

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has repeatedly warned users against relying on its chatbot for medical decisions. In a statement, the company clarified that its services “are not intended for use in the diagnosis or treatment of any health condition” and should not be used as a substitute for professional advice.
