ChatGPT-maker OpenAI CEO’s ‘two favourite questions’ on AI that can reason like humans
Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI who spearheaded the AI revolution with ChatGPT, is looking ahead to the future of artificial general intelligence (AGI). He recently shared the one question he would most like to be asked about this next frontier in AI, where machines could potentially think and reason like humans.
In an interview at Harvard Business School year, which was just made public, Altman shared not one but two questions: What do you hope society looks like when AGI gets built and how do you conceptualise the positive version of this?
Altman said his answer to these questions has evolved over time, as per report by Business Insider.
“My original conception was, at some point, we like, get over the threshold to this self-improving superintelligence, and it's this magic thing in the tower that we can ask any question, and it answers it, and it's like constantly off figuring out how to improve the world,” he said, adding that AGI will be “utopic and extremely dystopic.”
Altman envisions a future where AGI integrates into “society and the economy”, primarily as tools that amplify human productivity. He believes AGI will foster a “shared intelligence,” akin to a "scaffolding that exists between all of us”, enabling breakthroughs beyond the capacity of any single AI.
He said that “superintelligence is not what exists in any one neural network” but emerges “in this scaffolding between the neural networks” and forms a “technology tree” that propels collective progress.
Altman said that his experience at Burning Man showed him one part of “what the post-AGI world can look like”.
“Where people are just focused on doing stuff for each other, caring for each other, and making incredible gifts to give each other,” Altman said on the Life in Seven Songs podcast., as per Business Insider.
