OpneAI has now told investors that it is targeting $600 million in total compute spending by 2030. As reported by CNBC, this new figure showcases a sharp decline from the $1.4 trillion figure which OpenAI CEO Sam Altman touted months ago. This move the company raises concerns but its expansion plans which were outpacing its potential revenue growth. Citing sources close to the matter, CNBC report revealed that OpenAI’s revised plan offer a clearer timeline and ties more directly to expected revenue. The company projects $280 billion in revenue by 2030, split almost evenly between consumer and enterprise businesses. By scaling back its infrastructure commitments, OpenAI also hopes to reassure investors that its spending will align with growth.
The report further adds that OpenAI is also finalising a huge funding round which is expected to exceed $100 billion, with about 90% coming from strategic investors. Nvidia is also in talks to invest up to $30 billion, whereas SoftBank and Amazon are also negotiating large stakes. The round could value OpenAI at $730 billion pre-money.
In 2025, OpenAI generated $13.1 billion in revenue, surpassing its $10 billion target, while burning through $8 billion, slightly below its $9 billion forecast. The company continues to spend heavily on infrastructure but is now positioning its targets more conservatively.
OpenAI’s flagship chatbot ChatGPT now has more than 900 million weekly active users, up from 800 million in October, rebounding after a dip in growth last fall. The company declared a “code red” in December to sharpen its focus on improving ChatGPT amid competition from Google and Anthropic. Its coding product Codex has also surpassed 1.5 million weekly active users, competing directly with Anthropic’s Claude Code.
