Apple iPhone Fold may not ship until 2027 despite 2026 launch
Apple's much-awaited foldable iPhone, slated for a fall 2026 reveal, faces significant production hurdles. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts supply shortages will persist well into 2027 due to manufacturing challenges. This book-style foldable, featuring a 7.7-inch inner display, is expected to be Apple's priciest device yet, potentially costing $2,400.
Apple's highly anticipated foldable iPhone could face significant supply constraints well into 2027, despite plans to announce the device in fall 2026, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.The iPhone Fold is experiencing production delays that will likely limit availability even after its official launch. Kuo warns that early-stage manufacturing challenges and yield issues mean smooth shipments may not begin until 2027, with shortages expected through at least the end of 2026."Development of the foldable iPhone is behind earlier expectations," Kuo stated in a recent research note. He expects Apple to announce the device in the second half of 2026 but cautions that limited supply combined with strong demand will create a supply crunch lasting well over a year. The production difficulties mirror challenges typical of early foldable development. Foxconn is currently conducting trial production at its Guanlan facility in China, though display manufacturing faces significant defect rates that manufacturers are working to resolve. When it does arrive, the iPhone Fold will represent a major departure from competitors' designs. Unlike vertical flip-style foldables from Samsung and others, Apple's device adopts horizontal folding similar to a book.
The phone will feature a 5.3-inch outer display and a 7.7-inch inner screen that resembles an iPad when opened. The device uses specialized materials from Corning and Schott, with Lens Technology and Biel Crystal providing layered display components. This premium construction comes at a cost—pricing could reach $2,400, making it Apple's most expensive iPhone ever.Kuo emphasized that Apple views the foldable iPhone as critical to maintaining momentum before smart glasses with displays become mainstream. The larger folding screen offers advantages for displaying AI multimodal content, positioning the device as a bridge between current smartphones and future wearable computing. The iPhone Fold announcement is expected alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max in fall 2026, marking Apple's most aggressive product expansion strategy in iPhone history.
