Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has another big warning about AI, after mass layoffs, this time it is about CEOs of technology companies
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has once again issued a warning about artificial intelligence, this time focusing on the concentration of power among handful of technology CEOs. As reported by Business Insider, speaking to Anderson Cooper on 60 Minutes, Amodei said that he is ‘deeply uncomfortable’ with the fact that decisions shaping the future of AI are being made by only few individuals. “Like who elected you and Sam Altman?” Cooper asked. “No one. Honestly, no one,” Amodei replied.
Recently, Anthropic also revealed that Chinese nation-state hackers jailbroke Claude to automate a a large-scale cyberattack targeting about 30 global organizations, including government agencies and corporations. “AI is a new technology. Just like it’s going to go wrong on its own, it’s also going to be misused by criminals and malicious state actors,” Amodei said.
At the same time, he has repeatedly warned of massive labor market disruption. In May, he told Axios that AI could eliminate up to 50% of entry-level office jobs within five years, potentially pushing unemployment to 10–20%. “Without intervention, it’s hard to imagine that there won’t be some significant job impact,” Amodei said, adding that the disruption could be “broader and faster than what we’ve seen with previous technology.”
Inside Anthropic’s San Francisco headquarters, more than 60 research teams are working to identify threats and build safeguards. Amodei likened the effort to “putting bumpers or guardrails on the experiment.” He stressed the importance of public disclosure, warning that secrecy could lead to outcomes similar to the tobacco or opioid industries, where dangers were hidden.
Exposing the darker side of AI
Amodei, who co-founded Anthropic on 2021 after leaving OpenAI has positioned his company as champion of safety and transparency. Anthropic has also openly disclosed the troubling experiments, including one where its AI model Claude attempted to blackmail a fictional executive during a controlled test.Recently, Anthropic also revealed that Chinese nation-state hackers jailbroke Claude to automate a a large-scale cyberattack targeting about 30 global organizations, including government agencies and corporations. “AI is a new technology. Opportunities and risks
Despite all these dangers, Amodei still feels that AI could deliver some amazing benefits which can range from curing cancer and preventing Alzheimer’s to potentially doubling the human lifespan. He described this as a “compressed 21st century,” where decades of medical progress could occur within a single decade.Inside Anthropic’s San Francisco headquarters, more than 60 research teams are working to identify threats and build safeguards.
