Sennheiser HD 500 BAM review: The boom mic that makes your headphones ‘Pro’
Rating: 3.5/5
For this review, the HD 500 BAM (priced at Rs 4,990) was tested alongside the Sennheiser HD 560S headphones. The two together form a genuinely capable professional headset, without the premium price tag of one.
Design and controls
The HD 500 BAM arrives in no-fuss packaging: There’s the boom arm mic itself, a 1.5-metre cable with an in-line remote, and a Y-adapter for PC users. No carrying case, but extra ‘windshield’. The mic attaches to compatible headphones via a 2.5mm twist-and-lock pin. A word of caution here: Do not try to force the pin straight in, instead give it a slight twist, and it clicks right into place. The mic arm itself deserves a mention. It is flexible enough to position exactly where you need it yet firm enough to stay there. At the end of the cable sits a 3.5mm 4-pole CTIA connector, which means the HD 500 BAM plays nicely with a wide range of devices, including PC, PlayStation and Xbox controllers, and MacBooks. The in-line remote is old-school: a physical volume wheel and a physical mute toggle. There are no touch-sensitive surfaces, no app required, no firmware updates. Clearly, Sennheiser wants the mic to work without fuss – offering a deeply satisfying experience every single time.
Performance
Who is this mic for
The HD 500 BAM sits in an interesting middle ground. It is not a USB studio microphone for podcasters, and it is not a budget headset mic for casual use. It has a specific use – to turn a good pair of headphones you already own into a professional communication tool.If you already have a compatible Sennheiser headphone or are considering one, this is a no-brainer add-on. Sennheiser also offers bundled pricing when the HD 500 BAM is purchased alongside compatible models including the HD 560S, HD 599 SE, HD 505, HD 569, and HD 620S, which makes the decision even easier.
Verdict
The Sennheiser HD 500 BAM is a smart, practical, and well-executed accessory for anyone who spends significant time on calls, content creation or gaming. It transforms a pair of headphones into a proper headset without compromising on audio quality, and its analogue controls make daily use effortless. In a world where virtual communication is the new normal, sounding good is no longer optional, and the HD 500 BAM makes sure you do at a price of Rs 4,990.
