HMD may have killed the brand Nokia in European markets

HMD Global, the company behind Nokia-branded smartphones, has quietly removed Nokia devices from its websites across several European countries, signalling a potential end to the iconic brand's presence in the region's smartphone market.

As of September 30, 2024, Nokia smartphones are no longer listed on HMD's official websites for the UK, Germany, and Austria (via Nokiamob.net). This move follows HMD's earlier announcement this year of its intention to shift focus towards its own HMD-branded devices.

While Nokia-branded feature phones remain available on these sites, the absence of smartphones suggests a strategic pivot away from the Nokia name in HMD's core product lineup for Europe. The company's international website and those for markets in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Australia, New Zealand, and Latin America continue to display Nokia smartphones, though industry experts speculate this may change in the near future.

HMD's support page still lists Nokia smart and feature phones, indicating ongoing software support for existing devices. However, the duration of this support remains unclear.

The move raises questions about the future of Nokia-branded devices globally and HMD's plans for market positioning with its own branded products, while signalling the end of the once-dominant Nokia brand in the European smartphone landscape. Nokia Corporation, separate from HMD, continues to operate as a major player in network infrastructure and holds numerous technology patents.
