Starting with smartphones powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Mobile Platform and launching with Android 15, users can expect an extended period of support, encompassing both Android OS and kernel upgrades, alongside security patches.

This initiative will also extend to new Snapdragon 8 and 7-series mobile platforms launching later this year, Qualcomm said.

Longest duration of software support on Qualcomm

The eight-year timeframe represents the longest duration of software support Qualcomm Technologies has offered for smartphone platforms, a significant improvement from previous standards. This extended support aligns with growing consumer demand for longer-lasting devices and addresses increasing cybersecurity concerns.

How the programme works

The program leverages advancements in Android architecture, particularly “Project Treble,” allowing for updates without requiring significant modifications to OEM code. This reduces costs for device manufacturers and facilitates the delivery of timely updates.

It is to be noted that the updates are on OEM discretion. While Qualcomm provides the support framework, the decision to implement the full eight years of updates rests with the device manufacturer.
