Apple has selected Chinese manufacturer Lens Technology as its primary supplier of ultra-thin glass (UTG) for its upcoming foldable device, according to a report from The Elec. The agreement marks a significant step toward Apple's entry into the foldable device market, expected in late 2026.

Lens Technology will reportedly handle approximately 70% of Apple's UTG production, with US-based Corning providing raw materials. The Chinese manufacturer was chosen for its superior mass production capabilities and expertise in glass strengthening and crack minimization.

The Wall Street Journal and The Information have previously reported that Apple is targeting a late 2026 or early 2027 launch for its first foldable device, likely an iPhone. The company's design approach focuses on selective thinning of the UTG's central section, prioritizing durability while maintaining flexibility.

Samsung Display is expected to be the exclusive supplier of foldable panels for the device, complementing Lens Technology's UTG production. Two South Korean firms, Dowoo Insys and UTI, are positioned as potential secondary UTG suppliers.

Notably, Dowoo Insys secured two patents in October 2024 related to UTG central thinning technology, with one patent showing similarities to Apple's own patent from the same period. This technological alignment suggests a coordinated approach to solving the durability challenges inherent in foldable displays.

Lens Technology plans to expand its UTG production line later this year to meet Apple's manufacturing requirements. The expansion timeline aligns with the projected 2026 launch window and indicates Apple's seemingly establishing a robust supply chain for its first foray into the foldable device market.
