It is done. But sometimes, a single typing mistake in a mobile number can send your hard-earned money to the wrong person. Separately, a mistake in amount can send extra amount to a receiver. For example, you wanted to send Rs 10,000 and you end up sending 1,00,000. While the sender is responsible for the ‘wrong transaction’, a robust grievance redressal system can help you recover funds. In this article, we are breaking down the immediate steps you can take to reverse a wrong UPI transaction, and may be minimise the damage.

Can you reverse a UPI payment?

The simple answer is NO. If you have entered the password and sent the money, it cannot be undone. You can, however, contact the receiver to request them to send your money back or contact bank for further assistance.

How to report wrong transaction:

Every major app offers a portal to help you with your transactions. You can:Open your UPI app (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm)Find the specific transaction, and select "Report a Problem" or "Raise a Dispute".Follow the steps as each app has different way of handling things and register a complaint.

Contact your bank directly

The bank is the primary authority for fund reversals. Users can visit their nearest branch or call their customer care. Ensure to keep the following details ready:UPI Transaction IDBeneficiary UPI ID or Account NumberExact time and date of the transactionThese details can be found on the receipt of the transaction.

Use the NPCI portal

If the app or bank doesn't resolve the issue within a few days, visit the NPCI Customer Redressal Portal. You can file a formal grievance by entering your transaction ID. You will get a reference number which can later be used to track the development.

Pro Tip:

There can be times when you need to make payments in a hurry, for example, during flash sales or when you are getting late but it is advised that users must be careful when making payments. Try to scan QR codes wherever possible; confirm the name on UPI app before making a payment and double check the phone number before sending the money.
