Its rapid growth and initial success sparked excitement, bolstered by endorsements from high-profile figures, including Telegram’s CEO, who hailed it as “the fastest-growing digital service in the world.” The game was envisioned as a pioneer in the mini app revolution, offering players a blend of entertainment and crypto earning potential. However, this initial promise quickly unravelled. Within just three months, Hamster Kombat lost approximately 259 million players, leaving its active user base at around 41 million. Reasons behind Hamster Kombat's user loss

Despite its initial popularity, Hamster Kombat witnessed a sharp decline in its user base, dropping from 300 million users to just 41 million in three months. This 86% drop in active players can be attributed to several interconnected factors:


1. Gameplay and user experience issues
A primary reason for the drastic reduction in users was the gameplay itself:

• Repetitive and tedious mechanics: The game’s tap-to-earn model lacked depth, leading to player fatigue and boredom. Initial interest waned as users found the game monotonous, with little incentive to stay engaged beyond the promise of token earnings.
• AI-generated art: The use of AI-generated art was criticised as subpar, diminishing the overall user experience and contributing to a perception of low-quality production.

2. Token value decline

The HMSTR token's value plummeted from $0.009993 at launch to $0.002392, a decrease of 76%. This significant drop in token price had the following implications:

• Eroded trust: Early adopters who anticipated a steady return on investment felt disillusioned as the token lost value, impacting the game’s credibility.
• Financial losses: Many users who had invested time and resources in grinding for tokens found themselves with assets that had depreciated significantly, further prompting them to leave the platform.

Hamster Kombat’s operational history is marked by a series of missteps that compounded its decline:


1. Contentious token airdrop

The token airdrop, initially promised as a reward for player engagement, became a major point of contention:

• Delayed distribution: The game frequently postponed the airdrop, frustrating its user base and undermining trust.
• Anti-cheat measures and player disqualification: A sudden implementation of an anti-cheat system led to the disqualification of many users. Reports indicate that 2.3 million users were banned, and 6.8 billion HMSTR tokens were confiscated. This sweeping action, while intended to curb fraudulent activities, also caught legitimate players off guard and added to the game’s reputation issues.

2. User dissatisfaction and accusations

Local media, particularly in regions like Nigeria, reported on the widespread dissatisfaction among players. Many felt betrayed by the token’s steep devaluation and the unfulfilled promise of substantial returns despite months of gameplay. BeInCrypto, a cryptocurrency news outlet, highlighted that most users could only sell their earned tokens for minimal amounts, which intensified feelings of discontent and disillusionment.

Governmental and regulatory concerns

Hamster Kombat’s reach and influence did not go unnoticed by government authorities:

• Iran: The game drew criticism from Iran’s military deputy chief, who expressed concerns that it distracted voters during election periods. It was labelled a “soft tool” used by Western powers to undermine Iran’s religious government, reflecting fears of digital influence on public behaviour.
• Russia: In Russia, the game faced potential regulatory action as the chairman of the State Duma Committee called it a scam and advocated for its ban. These governmental reactions signalled growing scrutiny of blockchain-based games that operate on a large scale.

Hamster Kombat's association with Gotbit

On October 12, Hamster Kombat released a disclaimer distancing itself from Gotbit, a company recently charged by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for offering services related to market manipulation. The association with Gotbit added another layer of controversy, as users speculated whether such connections influenced the game’s token volatility and overall stability.
