Recently, Lenovo was reported to be launching its
ZUK Z1 smartphone in
India running Cyanogen OS out-of- the-box. After the revelation by the company, questions were raised towards both Cyanogen Inc and YU Televentures (a Micromax subsidiary) asking if their exclusive partnership was over.
However, Rahul Sharma, the CEO of YU Televentures cleared the air on Monday in a personal interaction session.
The company's CEO confirmed that the exclusive deal between
YU Televentures and Cyanogen Inc. has ended. Sharma added that the firm received an overwhelming response from users for its Yu Yunique smartphone, which was launched running near-stock
Android 5.1 Lollipop OS back in December last year.
"At YU, our brand promise is to be a community driven brand. Earlier we had launched a few phones running pure Android along with CyanogenOS devices. The feedback from the community was that they liked pure android more. So going forward we will focus on it. Also, the intention is to work towards an ecosystem and curate the ROMs that a lot of our users submit. Our new project will benefit the users and the developer community as we are working on Source Code Supply Chain Management system," he said.
It was mentioned that
Cyanogen OS failed to get any traction with YU smartphones as it came with its share of bugs. Sharma further clarified that the company will still be supporting its existing Cyanogen OS-based YU smartphones and will be pushing out future updates to the devices as well.
Although the YU Televentures CEO did not confirm it, this strongly suggests that upcoming smartphones by the company might run on stock Android OS. The Micromax subsidiary has already published a teaser for its next flagship smartphone, details of which are scarce at the moment. The handset however, is said to launch in this month itself.
Cyanogen and YU Televentures formed an exclusive partnership back in 2014, providing the Micromax subsidiary exclusive access to Cyanogen OS in India. This also led to OnePlus removing the OS from its OnePlus One handset right before launching it in India. Things took an interesting turn recently when Lenovo announced that its upcoming ZUK Z1 smartphone will also be running Cyanogen OS out-of- the-box. The smartphone is scheduled to launch in India within this month.
