Cybercrime biggest challenge for India: Rajnath Singh

NEW DELHI: Terming cybercrime as the biggest challenge for the country, home minister Rajnath Singh said the cyberspace is increasingly being used to radicalize young minds.

"Cybercrime is the biggest challenge these days with development and access to technology across the globe. Cyberspace is increasingly being used to radicalize young minds," he said addressing a security meet organized by Assocham here.

Singh expressed deep concern over the exponential growth in the figures of cybercrime. Earlier, the crime used to originate from land, water and air but now it emanates from cyberspace too.

"In the 20th century, the dimension of space was added to it. But now a days, cybercrime is showing exponential growth in its number, which is a matter of serious concern," he said.

The home minister said that in view of the reach of mobile phones and internet across the globe, including the far-flung areas, the main problem with cybercrime is its detection and prosecution, as it is faceless and borderless.

Singh said an expert group has been constituted in the home ministry to prepare a roadmap for effectively tackling cybercrimes in the country.

It has recommended setting up of an Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) to fight cybercrimes, he said.

"With increasing inter-connectivity in the world, the challenges will come and we must find ways to tackle these challenges and address the security loopholes in the networks," he said.
