Tamil Nadu CM Jayalalithaa laid to rest

December seems to be jinxed for Tamil Nadu as it witnessed yet another major loss with AIADMK supremo and Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa joining a list of iconic leaders whose end came in the last month of the year.

While AIADMK founder and charismatic actor-turned politician MGR died on December 24, 1987, his protege Jayalalithaa breathed her last yesterday (December 5), in a tragic coincidence of their end coming in the same month.

Marri Channa Reddy was governor of Tamil Nadu when Jayalalitha was CM in the 90s. Another Telugu man, K Rosaiah was governor of Tamil Nadu. Now at the time of her death, a Telugu man is the governor. Ch Vidyasagar Rao is governor, both of TN and Maharashtra.

Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalithaa had fond memories of her childhood in Mysuru, where her grandfather was the doctor to Mysore king Jayachamaraja Wadiyar. Years later, she recalled playing in her grandfather's house in Mysuru.

After selling her three houses in Mysuru -Lalitha Vilas and Rama Vilas in Lakshmipuram and a third house in Saraswathipuram -Sandhya left for Madras with her children. With Vidya's support, Sandhya established her career and en rolled her daughter in school and Bharatanatyam classes.

Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal will visit Chennai today to pay floral tributes to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, who passed away last night. "The Delhi Chief Minister will reach Chennai around 12.30 PM and pay tributes to Jayalalithaa at Rajajji Hall," said a senior Delhi government official.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday left for Chennai to pay floral tributes to Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa who passed away last night.

He will place a wreath on the mortal remains of Jayalalithaa at Rajaji Hall.

AIADMK cadre, the general public and VIPs on Tuesday morning made a beeline to Rajaji Hall at Triplicane in Chennai where former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa's body was kept for people to pay homage to her.

Government offices and educational institutions in Kerala will remain shut today as a mark of respect to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, who passed away after a prolonged illness.

Jayalalithaa has always had a love for Hyderabad, right from the days she started acting in the movies. The southern superstar who rose from being a bookworm to stardom, and then to being Amma, invested in the pearl city, one of her favourite getaway.

Actor Junior NTR took to Twitter to say: "Great era comes to an end. But her majestic charisma and determination will continue to live and inspire many women in our country." It may be mentioned that Jayalalitha had paired in several films with NTR Jr's grandfather NT Rama Rao.

Flags will be flown at half mast. And no ceremonial functions will be organized.

PM Modi will leave for Chennai at 9.30am today. He will go to Rajaji Hall and lay a wreath on the mortal remains of Jayalalitha. Venkaiah Naidu and Ponnu Radhakrishnan will represent the central government at the funeral.
