take it easy policy: while the man in the street is no stranger to an lic policy, what he might find strange is the profile of the agents who make up the premium end of the lic line-up. the fact of the matter is that there is an uncommon side to the common man you identify as the ubiquitous lic agent. and this uncommon side is presented by prominent personalities who have earned money for themselves and the lic. says ap singh, lic senior divisional manager, delhi circle-i, "we have people from all walks of life working for us. for instance, ritu nanda, wife of escorts group chairman rajan nanda, has been in the lic business for the past 19 years. and she has generated good business both for herself and the lic." but singh's example is only a case in point. a host of names associated with prominent business houses and professions figure on the agent list of the lic. "most people might not be aware of this, but there are a number of mlas, mps and ministers who started out as lic agents," informs singh, "ak antony, nd tiwari, giani zail singh, shanta kumar and ys parmar, to name a few, used to be lic agents before they established themselves in the political arena. of course, once a person becomes an mla or mp, finding time to pursue lic work is not a practical possibility." however, the status of an agent in the outside world has no bearing on his or her status with the lic. "one can became a celebrity in insurance salesmanship by generating record business," offers singh. incidentally, as per the guidelines issued by the insurance regulatory development authority, those aspiring to be agents need to undergo training and subsequently clear a test conducted by the insurance institute of india and an interview. says singh, "the procedure is stringent to infuse professionalism in our agents." a professional preoccupation for some, a lifeline for everybody. throw in agents with a prominent difference, and insurance cover is value for money!
