2. After Pawar vs Pawar, Thackeray vs Thackeray in Maharashtra?
Why the speculation?
  • A meeting between Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday sparked speculation about the former’s entry into the NDA for the Lok Sabha polls.
  • The BJP is reportedly looking to set up a Thackeray-versus-Thackeray contest in Maharashtra to drive maximum benefit from the split of the Shiv Sena, founded by Bal Thackeray.
The boost
  • Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde, a BJP ally, now has the Shiv Sena, after favourable decisions from the Election Commission and the Mahastra Speaker.
  • The ruling alliance also has Ajit Pawar’s faction of the Nationalist Congress Party — recognised as the original party, founded by his uncle Sharad Pawar, who is fighting a legal battle against the former’s rebellion.
What’s in it for Raj?
  • If the alliance is sealed, the MNS may contest from one seat in Mumbai, where Raj’s cousin Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) could make an impact.
  • The two cousins have faced off multiple times in past elections but Uddhav was then head of the undivided Shiv Sena.
Second family tussle
  • This could be the second such battle with the BJP alliance expected to field Ajit Pawar’s wife Sunetra against Sharad Pawar’s daughter and Baramati MP Supriya Sule.
Raj and the BJP
  • The BJP had criticised Raj Thackeray when his party ran a campaign against north Indians working in Maharashtra.
  • Raj enjoys the reputation of being a good orator, but his party’s never made much of a political impact — its best performance coming in 2009, when it won 13 Assembly seats. It has never won a seat in Parliament.
Meanwhile…
  • On a petition by the NCP’s Sharad Pawar faction, the Ajit Pawar group told the Supreme Court on Tuesday that it wouldn’t use Pawar senior’s photograph.
  • The Supreme Court allowed the Sharad Pawar faction to use 'Nationalist Congress Party-Sharadchandra Pawar' as its name and 'Man blowing Turha' (a traditional trumpet) as the poll symbol in the upcoming polls.
