The Indian Navy and DRDO successfully conducted the first salvo firing of the Naval Anti‑Ship Missile–Short Range (NASM‑SR) from a Sea King helicopter off Odisha’s coast. Two missiles were launched in quick succession, proving the system’s salvo capability that overwhelms enemy defenses. Telemetry confirmed objectives were met, with strikes at the vulnerable waterline of target vessels. NASM‑SR is a fire‑and‑forget missile with post‑launch lock‑on ability, carrying a 100 kg warhead and reaching 55 km at high subsonic speeds while flying low to evade detection. Its long‑burn sustainer ensures extended powered flight. Critical systems were developed indigenously with industry support. Work is also underway on a longer‑range variant, NASM‑MR, showcased on the Navy’s MiG‑29K at Aero India 2025.
