AEW Star Reflects on Their Bond with WWE’s Shinsuke Nakamura

During the current NJPW G1 Climax 34 tournament, AEW star Konosuke Takeshita has been open about his relationship with WWE's Shinsuke Nakamura, providing insight into the influence the veteran wrestler has had on his career. At this year's NJPW G1 Climax 34, Konosuke Takeshita has made a significant impact in the B Block with several standout performances that have garnered attention. Takeshita sits third in his block after winning four of the last seven matches, with only two matches remaining. His determination to make an impact on the competition stems from his performances, which have demonstrated his potential as a rising star in the professional wrestling industry.



In an interview with Tokyo Sports, Takeshita spoke candidly about his relationship with Shinsuke Nakamura, who has been a guiding force in his career. Takeshita expressed his deep respect for Nakamura, acknowledging the WWE star’s immense achievements and influence within the industry. He stated, “Isn’t he the top of the top as a Japanese player? In terms of achievements and influence.” Takeshita went on to describe how he feels a strong connection to Nakamura, saying, “I am probably the closest to him as a Japanese wrestler, and I have met and talked with him many times. He has said to me, ‘The future is Take-chan.’ It’s a heavy cross to bear, but more than anything, it’s my confidence.”

Nakamura’s advice to Takeshita

Takeshita also reflected on the advice he has received from Nakamura and other mentors, particularly regarding his approach to the G1 Climax. He shared how these mentors have encouraged him to stay true to himself and to give his all in every match, saying, “I am often told, ‘Do it for your own sake,’ and ‘Don’t be nice.’ I always keep that in mind when I fight.” Takeshita emphasized the importance of proving himself in the G1 Climax, knowing that his mentors are watching his every move. “That’s why I can’t play even one half-hearted or lukewarm match in this official G1 tournament. The mentors are watching me.”

As Takeshita looks ahead, he is driven by the desire to match the accomplishments of his mentors, including Nakamura. He is fully committed to the G1 Climax, understanding that success in this tournament is a crucial step toward reaching the same level as those who have inspired him. “I think my mentor would not be happy to see me win, but would say, ‘You deserve to win.’ In order for me to be on the same level as my mentor someday, I absolutely have to go through the G1. I will go there without hesitation,” Takeshita concluded, underscoring his unwavering determination to succeed.
