SummerSlam 2025 could see John Cena and Cody Rhodes in the most intriguing storyline WWE's ever constructed, and Cody could turn heel in the process. As the stakes have never been higher, and permanent changes to personalities are just around the bend, fans are anticipating a massive double-turn in the making. This includes SummerSlam 2025, the first two-night SummerSlam in WWE history, which will take place at MetLife Stadium on August 2 and 3. John Cena vs. Cody Rhodes- Street Fight for the Undisputed WWE Championship. Cena captured the title from Rhodes at WrestleMania 41 in an ending controversial by design, with interference and nefarious tactics, being a rarity in his career, defining the heel turn as a 16-time world champion.

John Cena’s return to babyface leaves the door open for Rhodes

John Cena confronted Cody on the SmackDown go-home episode to SummerSlam and, after some bravado, delivered an impassioned promo about the way he has been acting as of late. He confessed to having lost his way by getting in line with outside influences and said the "real John Cena" was now back. And with that, Cena seemed to completely reclaim his babyface persona, believing there would need to be lots of room for firsts as they entered the final stretch leading up to their big showdown in SummerSlam.
With this change in Cena, it has raised some questions about the status of Cody Rhodes. Now, the people's champion and the man (the "American Nightmare") who was supposed to finish his story, Rhodes, finds his career at a crossroads. Those actions and increasingly aggressive tone lately, most notably during his ongoing rivalry with Randy Orton, have raised some eyebrows. Also Read: WWE Summer Slam 2025 Day 1 and Day 2 Full Schedule, Date, Start timings, How to Watch and More

Cody Rhodes inching toward a darker persona?

Rhodes has publicly said on several occasions now that he has no plans on working heel, but fans and pundits alike are reading between the lines. His fans know where this dark turn is headed; his body language, his subtle taunts at the crowds, along with the chance of surprise interference during the match. Some, still, even speculate that one or more of Cena's other former allies may join forces with Rhodes just in time to turn the feud and push Cena into a necessary, and overdue, full character change.
If WWE does this double-turn (turning Cena back into a full-on babyface and turning Rhodes into a top-tier heel), it will be a monumental creative decision that will rank among the biggest of the year. With a Street Fight at play, expect total carnage. This leaves plenty of room for outside meddling, jaw-dropping plot developments, and heartbreaking drama.
