WWE Legend Sparks Controversy: Gunther Called a 'Placeholder' Champion

Gunther, the Ring General, has been an absolute juggernaut since capturing the Intercontinental Championship and then ascending to the throne as World Heavyweight Champion. He's conquered the likes of Randy Orton and Sami Zayn with ruthless efficiency, leaving a trail of fallen foes in his wake. Bully Ray, a WWE Hall of Famer, stated on Busted Open Radio that the World Heavyweight Title has lost focus. He claimed that the title hasn't gained any significance and that Gunther has effectively turned into a stand-in.

He said, “I don’t think there has been as much attention on that championship now that Gunther has it,” he explained. “I think he has been a good, placeholder. I don’t like the word ‘placeholder’ for him, but I think he’s kept the belt exactly where it was. It hasn’t taken a step back, but I don’t think it has taken a step forward.”

Ray went on to say that since the celebrity is so good in the ring, it might be time for him to start acting more shadily. Tommy Dreamer concurred, adding that the winner requires additional heat.

“So, if you’re not going to make him a babyface, then he’s got to go for one thing … heat. We need to see him bloody people, choke people out like lifeless, do different things.”

Whether or not Gunther is truly just a "placeholder" remains to be seen. But one thing's for sure: his reign will be put to the test this Saturday Night's Main Event as he defends his title against the ferocious Jey Uso.
