Mark Henry has revisited one of the most intense moments of his early WWE career. Recently, he opened up about a locker room confrontation that escalated to a heated rivalry. Speaking candidly about his struggles transitioning from Olympic lifting to professional wrestling, Henry detailed an incident involving Shawn Michaels that forced WWE leadership to intervene.
The Hall of Famer explained that the situation occurred after he broke his ankle. It left him dependent on crutches. According to Henry, those crutches were hidden, and there was constant mockery.
Mark Henry recalls threatening to kill Shawn Michaels
Mark Henry recalled warning Shawn Michaels repeatedly to stop. When the taunts continued, his response turned severe. “I said, ‘Hey man, I don’t feel like playing. Enough is enough. I’ve been doing this all day. I’m done,’” Henry said in his recent appearance on Inside The Ropes.
“You’re too little to be talking to me, man. I’ll kill you. There ain’t enough people standing behind you right now to stop me from taking your life… If you don’t kill me, I’mma kill every last one of you when I get back.”
Henry explained that Michaels reacted with fear, telling others nearby, “Y’all need to do something with this dude. He is nuts.” The confrontation did not end there.
Vince McMahon stepped in and made it clear the behavior could not continue. “Vince was like, ‘Damn it. You can’t threaten the top guys.’ I said, ‘He wasn’t acting like a top guy.’”
WWE's response shaped Mark Henry's career
Instead of ending Henry’s run, WWE chose a different path. He was sent to Canada to train under Bret Hart. “If I wouldn’t have went to Canada, I wouldn’t have been in wrestling. I would have quit because I was tired of them,” Henry admitted.
Training daily in Calgary and later inside Stu Hart’s Dungeon transformed his understanding of the craft. “I was up there for nine and a half months. Training everyday. Every morning in the ring. Four hours a day,” Henry said, explaining how the experience reshaped both his skills and mindset.
Looking back, Henry has acknowledged that the incident changed the direction of his career. The lessons learned during that exile helped him earn respect inside the locker room and build the foundation for a long, decorated run. Mark Henry retired in 2017 and entered the WWE Hall of Fame in 2018, closing a career that nearly derailed during one heated night backstage.
