WWE Hall of Famer Who Won The First Royal Rumble Looks Back On The Biggest Achievement of His Career

The Royal Rumble wrestling event has been produced by the WWE ever since 1988. This year, we will witness the 38th Royal Rumble, less than a week away, and it will be the first-ever Royal Rumble event not to take place in the month of January. But let's look back to the very first time this event took place. The 1988 event saw hoards of fans gathering at the Copps Coliseum in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. And leaving everyone behind, one name, much to the chagrin and astonishment of everyone, rang the loudest - "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan.

WWE Hall of Famer was shocked to know about him winning the first Royal Rumble

"Hacksaw" Jim Duggan was the first-ever winner of the Royal Rumble. Back in 1988, when the first Rumble took place, wrestling legends like Jim "The Anvil" Neidhart and Bret Hart of the Hart Foundation took part in it. But much to the shock of almost everyone, the winner included, it was Hacksaw who ended up taking the victory home.

On the Busted Open Radio show, Duggan spoke of what it was like to see his name as the winner of the event. Being the inaugural winner is, according to him, his biggest career achievement. He said:

"Nobody was more surprised than me to win that sucker, that's for sure, man. Obviously, it's the biggest feather in my cap. You know I was never world champion, I was never tag team champion, I was never Intercontinental Champion, I was lucky to win a match brother."

According to Duggan, he was never the one who schmoozed with the management or the top people. So seeing his name on the sheet as the winner came as a shock to him, like everyone else who watched the show. But it also ended up being the shiniest medal he ever won.

Royal Rumble 2025 is the most anticipated event yet

The 2025 Royal Rumble is only a couple of days away, and we have half of the roster for the Men's Royal Rumble and one-third for the Women's. But this is already anticipated to be the biggest Rumble event ever, with the show being WWE's first PPV and live-streaming event to air on Netflix.

We have two matches that night other than the two headliners - a ladder match for the Undisputed WWE Championship between Cody Rhodes and Kevin Owens and a Two out of three falls match for the WWE Tag Team Championship between #DIYAand Motor City Machine Guns. The event is set for February 1 at the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Big Five is starting, and we are all sat for it.
