Kevin Nash calls “Montreal Screwjob” an American Tragedy

The Montreal Screwjob, the 1997 Survivor Series match featured Bret "The Hitman" Hart defending his WWE Championship against Shawn Michaels. Behind the scenes, Hart was leaving WWE for rival company WCW, but he didn't want to lose the title in his home country of Canada.

To his surprise, WWE owner Vince McMahon had other plans. During the match, without Hart's knowledge, McMahon signaled the referee to call for the bell while Michaels had Hart in a submission hold, even though Hart hadn’t tapped out. This moment became known as the "Screwjob" because Hart was robbed of the title in an unfair way. Hart was clearly upset with McMahon as he directly spat right on McMahon’s face.

Now, WWE Hall of Famer, Kevin Nash has commented on the incident on Kliq This: The Kevin Nash Podcast. "I remember exactly where I was," Nash said. "The Montreal Screwjob is our JFK assassination," the Hall of Famer added comparing the WWE Screwjob to the great American tragedy.

When Bret Hart appeared on Netflix’s hit docuseries on the former WWE Boss, Mr, McMahin, he said, "I couldn't have given a man more than what I gave Vince McMahon." Hart went on to add, "None of that meant anything when Vince screwed me that day in Montreal."

Michaels came out victorious at the event but it was devastating for Hart and his home country fans. Regardless, the WWE legend left the company to join World Championship Wrestling (WCW) and remained there until October 2000. Hart was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame by Stone Cold Steve Austin in 2006.
