Mark William Calaway, popularly known by his ring name The Undertaker, is considered one of the greatest wrestlers ever. He quickly rose to fame due to his ‘Deadman’ persona that he played under the alias, The Undertaker. Mark Calaway recently appeared in the INSIGHT with Chris Van Vliet podcast where he opened up about his personal experiences in his long and high-profile wrestling career. Among the many things he unveiled, he addressed the creation of his iconic ‘Rolling Eyes’ move. Turns out the move of rolling the eyes back in the head was completely unintentional. Here’s what Calaway had to say about it:"Crazy enough, I did it by accident. I had a match and I want to say it was Greg Valentine. I was working with Greg Valentine, and I was on him, and I had him down in the corner, and I just slapped a choke on him. You know, because of my hair being long like it was, I just put the choke on him, and I threw my hair back. And, when I threw my hair back, my eyes went back and I wondered if I could get them back there, and I did. Then I go back, I get to the Gorilla Position, and everybody is looking like, 'What the hell was that?"It was after this moment, that the Deadman took to the Gorilla position and instinctively rolled his eyes at the back of his head. He wasn’t aware of what he did himself, but the crowd was thrilled and in fear of what was happening. Seeing the arena’s reaction, The Undertaker checked out a replay of himself on the screen, and seeing how terrifying it looked, he played further into the Deadman role and incorporated his tongue along with the eye roll. Calaway continued to describe the situation further in the podcast."So, it just happened by accident. And then, naturally, I used to have a fairly long tongue.
So, the eyes and the tongue. Those were requested a lot by people that you probably wouldn't think would want to see that."Mark Calaway went on to debut his ‘American Badass’ persona in 2000. This new side of him let him cut more promos, and tell more stories, which was needed after ten years of playing the Deadman character. However, in his interview, Calaway stated how the ‘Deadman The Undertaker’ persona will forever be his legacy.
