WWE legend Paul Wight, better known to WWE fans as The Big Show, made a surprise appearance at the Country Music Awards (CMA) on Wednesday night. This marks Wight's first significant wrestling-related public appearance since the Jericho Cruise in January. The former WWE World Champion has been teasing the return of Captain Insano to AEW for some time now, with fans eagerly anticipating his in-ring debut with the character.
Nonetheless, Wight, donning the iconic Captain Insano gear from the Adam Sandler film "The Waterboy," provided a memorable moment by lifting up country music singer Bailey Zimmerman during his performance of New To Country at the CMA’s.
While Captain Insano has yet to wrestle for AEW, he has made appearances in pre-recorded segments alongside The Acclaimed and the pairing of MJF and Adam Cole. Wight recently confirmed that he's aiming to bring the character to AEW Grand Slam in Brisbane, Australia, in February 2025.
In an interview with
Fightful during September, Wight revealed that he had secured the intellectual property rights to Captain Insano with the help of AEW President Tony Khan. This development has cleared the way for the character's full-fledged return to the squared circle.
He said, "I have heard from him. I heard his fat ass had a knee surgery a few months ago, but was hoping to be back real soon and definitely I hope he's going to compete in February here in Brisbane. So yeah, a lot of that was intellectual property and Tony Khan actually, ‘cause I lost the Big Show. That's a WWE intellectual property."
He further stated, "Which is tough when you build a brand for 20 years, but it's business, I understand it is what it is. But building yourself a new identity is like starting all over. People are always gonna identify you as one thing. You're like, ‘Yeah, I'm not that guy anymore, I'm this other guy.’ Captain Insano was a pretty cool gift. Tony Khan worked it out, got the intellectual property rights for me. So we've been waiting to pull the trigger on that, and a lot of it, and I'll just be honest, a lot of it's been my fault, having surgeries and stuff like that."
